Root (also known as superuser, administrator or admin)

is the most privileged user account in Unix-like operating systems. The root user has unlimited system access and control, and is identified by User ID (UID) 0. This account can perform all administrative tasks, including system configuration, user management, software installations and full file system access. Although essential for system maintenance and administration, root access carries significant responsibility due to its unrestricted powers. Modern security practices recommend minimising the use of root privileges, instead encouraging the use of regular user accounts with temporary elevation of privileges through tools such as 'sudo'. This approach, often referred to as the principle of least privilege, helps to maintain system security by reducing the risk of accidental system changes or unauthorised access, while still allowing necessary administrative functions.
